Gad (Hebrew: גד; "troop, company"), (b. 2251 AM or 1753 BC), was the first son of Jacob and Zilpah (who was Leah's maid) and the seventh of Jacob overall. He was the ancestor of the tribe of Gad, one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

Date of birth

In the summer of 2250 AM, Leah realized that she had broken her earlier pattern of pregnancy and childbirth. So, just as Rachel had given her handmaid, Bilhah, to Jacob as a surrogate, Leah proposed the same arrangement with Jacob and her own handmaid, Zilpah.

Gad was born in the spring of 2251 AM, and Leah said, "A troop is coming!" (Genesis 30:9-11 )

Entry into Egypt

In 2298 AM (1706 BC), Gad entered Egypt permanently, having visited Egypt twice before to buy grain during the famine of 2296-2302 AM (1708-1701 BC). He was 47 years old at the time and had seven named sons: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. (Genesis 46:16 )
