Crete is an island in the Mediterranean Sea which was home to the Minoan Civilization. The capital of Crete is Heraklion (also spelt Iraklion). It is currently part of the nation of Greece.

Notable features of Crete include the Samaria Gorge, the Minoan remains at Knossos and the former leper colony at Spinalonga.

Crete was the site of a major World War II battle, when German forces seized it in 1941, after the conquest of Greece.
