A songwriter is a person who composes the words and music for a song. Someone who writes only the words (lyrics) is known as a lyricist, while the composer of the music or melody is known as a melodist. In opera the writer of the words (dialog and songs) is known as a librettist.
Performers who write their own songs are known as singer-songwriters.
