West Side Story is one of the most popular and influential musicals of the 20th century. Its central theme is of a love that is not ruled by any notion of right and wrong, and these necessarily lead to tragedy.

It is based on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with music by famous conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The Capulets and Montagues of Shakespeare's classic play are replaced with the Jets and Sharks, rival street gangs[1] in Manhattan.
