Zell Miller was a Democratic United States Senator from Georgia. An outspoken conservative, he previously served as Lieutenant Governor and then Governor of the state of Georgia. He served one term in the Senate, where he was first appointed in 2000 to fill a vacant seat and then easily won a special election later that same year. A Conservative Democrat, he became increasingly alienated from the Democratic Party's left-wing activist base during his term in the Senate.
