This was due to the high [[Europe]]an [[demand]] for their tailfeathers, which were almost as prized as [[peacock]] feathers, yet much rarer because flamingoes are uniquely [[New World]] birds (whereas peacocks were known even to the ancient [[Romans]]). However, fashions will change, and today flamingo feathers are not particularly prized.
In the 1950s and 1960s, there was a brief [[fad]] of using stuffed flamingoes as [[lawn ornament]]s. Today, flamingoes are a [[protect]]ed [[species]].
