Phineas Taylor (P.T.) Barnum (1810-1891) was the owner and promoter of the "Greatest Show on Earth," an entertaining traveling circus. Financial support from J.P. Morgan and Cornelius Vanderbilt enabled Barnum to take his circus around the country.
Barnum sold millions of tickets in his lifetime, attracting visitors to see elephant "Jumbo" and General Tom Thumb, who stood only 25 inches tall. He included both President Abraham Lincoln and Queen Victoria as fans.
Barnum said, "Most persons, on the whole, are humbugged by believing too little, than by believing too much."[1]
