Los Angeles (from Spanish "Los Ángeles, meaning "The Angels", often called "L.A." or "LA") is a city, a county and a metropolitan area in California. With 3.8 million in the city and 9.9 million in the county, it is second only to New York.[1].
The movie industry of Hollywood is based in LA. Many world-class aerospace firms are there too, like Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, and Howard Hawks Aviation. Beaches line the coast along the Santa Monica bay and include the famous neighborhoods of Malibu beach to the north, and Venice Beach. The twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach make up the largest port on the west Coast, larger even than Seattle or San Diego. Los Angeles is in an arid area, and a great amount of water comes from the Colorado River through the Los Angeles Aqueduct and from the California Water project.
Many people from all over the world live in LA, and as a result there are restaurants from well over 300 nations there[Citation Needed]. The weather is excellent all year around, which is why the movie business moved there - the light is excellent for 'shooting' for over 300 days a year. The Mayor of LA is Antonio Villaraigosa.
Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics.
