In mathematics, an essential discontinuity in a function is point for which either the left limit or the right limit does not exist. In some sense, there is no way to "fix" an essential discontinuity.
This is opposed to the removable discontinuity, and the jump discontinuity, which can both be "fixed" without dramatically altering the behavior of the function.
