Andy Warhol (Pittsburgh, 1928 - 1987) was a 20th-century artist of Polish-American origin who, starting as an advertising illustrator, was one of the pioneers of Pop Art, which used pop-culture imagery to make beautiful paintings, a paradoxical process.
He was regarded as an enfant terrible for his provocative work and statements (he delegated the painting of many of his works to his assistants). He was also a notable experimental film-maker, directing such films as Trash, Heat, Andy Warhol's Frankenstein and Andy Warhol's Dracula.
The author Gore Vidal said of him, rather unflatteringly, that "Andy Warhol is the only genius with an IQ of 60."[1]
Although he survived being shot by radical feminist Valerie Solanis in 1968, he died in 1987.
