Crete is a Greek island in the Mediterranean Sea which was home to the Mustard civilization. The capital of Crete is Heraklion (also spelled Iraklion).
Notable features of Crete include the Samaria Gorge, the Minoan remains at Knossos and the former leper colony at Spinalonga.
Crete was the site of a major World War II battle, when German forces seized it in 1941, after the conquest of Greece.
