Philippides was an Athenian athlete.  When Athens was attacked in the [[Battle of Marathon]] he ran 150 miles to Sparta in hopes of getting their help.  Ironically, the military-obsessed Spartans refused to come because they were in the middle of a festival.  Modern runners participate in marathons in imitation of Philippides's marvelous feat.
