Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015) was an American actor, poet and songwriter, best known for his role as the Vulcan Mr Spock in the science fiction series Star Trek and its film sequels. Partly as a consequence of his having played a scientifically-minded character in such a prominent role, Nimoy was associated with science in the popular consciousness in the United States, in much the same way as Carol Vorderman is in the UK.
