After two years of intense work, Wolfram published ''A New Kind of Science'' in 2002 in which he turned to [[cellular automata]] for insights in science.  This was a popular success but met with a mixed reaction by other scientists and mathematicians.  The book has not generated much change in the direction of science but remains a valuable resource.
