Sony is a Japanese company that specializes in consumer electronics. Two of their most popular products are the Walkman and the PlayStation. Their chairman and CEO is currently Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai.
PlayStation
Back in 1988, Sony and video game company Nintendo, teamed up to create a CD-ROM for the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo). However, Sony would retain all the rights to the CD-ROM technology. This made Nintendo feel uneasy. As a result, Nintendo went to Philips to create another CD-ROM. The CD-ROM technology never saw the light of day. However, Sony decided to create a console of their own, and on December 3, 1994, the Sony PlayStation was released in Japan. The system was released in North America on September 9, 1995. In 2000, Sony released the PlayStation 2, which would go on to be the best-selling video game console of all time. In Japan, the PlayStation 2 helped spark the DVD market. The PlayStation 2 would be followed up with the PlayStation 3, in 2006. Sales for the PlayStation 3 were initially slow, but improved as time went on. Similar to it's predecessor, the PlayStation 3 was one of the first Blu-Ray players. In 2013, the PlayStation 4 was released.
