Following the execution of his father and brothers by [[Cao Cao]] he raised an army to oppose him. After Cao Cao was able to trick Ma Chao into distrusting his own uncle his army was totally defeated. He then sought refuge with [[Zhang Lu]] but didn't like Zhang Lu's incompetence. Upon the invasion of the territory of Liu Zhang by [[Liu Bei]], Ma Chao took the chance to defect to Liu Bei's army. He was highly trusted by Liu Bei and his advisors and was named one of the [[Five Tiger Generals]] of Shu Han.
