Frederick Augustus Conrad Muhlenberg (January 2, 1750 - June 4, 1801) was a Lutheran minister, a delegate to the Pennsylvania state constitutional Convention, and the first Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.[1]
Early life
He was born in Trappe, Pennsylvania on January 2, 1750. He was educated at Halle,[2] and held pastorates in Pennsylvania and New York City.[3] He is the brother of Peter Muhlenberg.
Career
He became a member of the Continental Congress in 1779 and 1780, and served in the US House of Representatives from 1789 to 1797. During his time in the House he was twice elected as Speaker, being the nation's first as well as third Speaker of the House.
Passing
He died at Lancaster, Pennsylvania June 4, 1801.[4]
