An engram is a Scientology and Dianetics concept having to do with certain types of memory. These memories are usually negative, and are unconscious. According to their literature:
- Engrams are a complete recording, down to the last accurate detail, of every perception present in a moment of partial or full “unconsciousness" and The goal and end result of Dianetics is the state of Clear, attained through many hours of Dianetics auditing.[1]
Comparison to Similar Concepts
Modern psychiatry also recognizes unconscious memories and their ability to cause pain. Some types of psychotherapy aim to reveal and confront these memories.
