NRSV's most controversial passage is {{bibleverse|Isaiah|7:14}}: "Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel." Here NRSV follows the Masoretic text. The Masoretics were Jewish scholars who compiled a Hebrew version of the Old Testament about AD 700. In the time of Jesus and the apostles, scripture was commonly read in Greek. The Greek version of the passage, quoted in {{bibleverse|Matthew|1:23}}, describes the young woman described as a virgin.
