Transliteration is the process of converting names and other words into another alphabet, without any attempt at translation.

The Japanese language has transliterated many English loan words:

  • apartment => アパート (a-pa-a-to)
  • Pocket Monsters => ポケモン (po-ke-mo-n) See: Pokémon

Some transliterations hardly change the pronunciation at all:

  • radio => ラジオ (ra-ji-o) (RAH DEE OH)
