Oakville is an unincorporated census-designated place (CDP) in South St. Louis County, Missouri. It had a population of 36,143 at the 2010 census.

History

The Oakville district received its name around 1866 from J. S. Schulte, a local justice of the peace and schoolteacher. As might be surmised, Schulte based the title on the many sturdy oaks in the area. Oakville has been recognized as a CDP since the 1990s.[1]

Geography

The Oakville CDP occupies the southeastern corner of St. Louis County, its eastern border being formed by the Mississippi River and its western border by Missouri State Highway 267 (locally known as Lemay Ferry Road) and the Meramec River, which empties into the Mississippi at Oakville's southern tip. Its official coordinates are 38°27′31″N 90°19′10″W.

The community has a total area of 17.72 square miles, and an average elevation of 597 feet.[2]

Demographics

At the 2010 census, Oakville had a total of 36,143 inhabitants, grouped into 13,788 households, with a population density of 3,736.2 people per square mile. This figure represented a slight increase from the 2000 census, when Oakville had a population of 35,309. 95.95% of the inhabitants were White, 0.82% were African-American, 0.10% were Native American, 1.75% were Asian, 0.01% were Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 0.33% were from some other race, and 1.04% were from two or more races. Hispanics of any race were 1.43% of the population.

The median age in Oakville was 43.7 years, with 22.8% of inhabitants under the age of 18, 7.9% between 18 and 24 years old, 21.1% between 25 and 44, 33.9% between 45 and 64, and 14.3% 65 years old or older. The sex ratio was 49.0% male, 51.0% female.[3]

According to the 2018 American Community Survey, Oakville had a median household income of $80,594, and a median family income of $98,232. The unemployment rate was 2.1%. The per capita income was $38,526. About 4.3% of the population lived below the poverty line, including 5.3% of those under the age of 18 and 3.8% of those 65 years of age or older.[4]

Education

Like most of unincorporated South St. Louis County, Oakville belongs to the Mehlville R-IX School District. Facilities within the community include Oakville High School (established 1969), one of two in the district. It has a total enrollment of close to 1,700 students in grades 9-12. Its mascot is the Tigers, and the school colors are black and gold.[5]

Oakville also includes three private schools, all part of the Roman Catholic Church: St. Francis of Assisi, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, and Queen of All Saints.
