Nice (pronounced Neess) is a Mediterranean port city of southern France, on the French Riviera. It is a major tourist resort. Located in the Franco-Italian borderlands, Nice passed periodically between the control of France and of various Italian states; in 1860 it was (along with Savoy) ceded by the Kingdom of Sardinia to France in return for French help in the war against Austria. It was occupied by Italian forces during the Second World War.
