The term “Rockefeller Republican” was coined largely out of the [[liberal]] views of [[Nelson Rockefeller]], the vice president of the [[United States]] under [[Gerald Ford]]'s presidency.  The term originally held a strong Northeast regional connotation and was not applied to liberal Republicans nationwide.
