Svalbard or Spitsbergen is an archipelago and territory of the Kingdom of Norway in the Barents Sea. Its capital, Longyearbyen, is the world's northenmost city. The population of Svalbard is mainly Russian, a community which has for decades worked coal mines in the islands by agreement between the former Soviet Union and Norway.
