The Cyropaedia, also sometimes spelled Cyropedia, is the longest and one of the best known works of the ancient Athenian author Xenophon. It is the most extensive work from antiquity on the life and campaigns of the Achaemenid ruler Cyrus the Great.

For many this volume provides an alternative historical narrative to the more traditionally accepted sequence of events as recorded in works such as Herodotus' Histories. It is also filled with extensive dialogues between individuals which are used by [Xenophon]] to illustrate principles of good leadership which we can now only accept on good faith. For either one or the other of these reasons, the work is generally accepted as a "partially fictional"[1] volume.

Yet only 100 years later from the original events they proport, this volume remained one of Alexander the Great's favourite volumes and carried it with him everywhere for constant study.[2]
