In Jan 2026, it was revealed that Haaretz revealed that former columnist and diplomat Alon Pinkas received substantial undisclosed payments linked to [[Qatar]]i interests while writing opinion pieces for the newspaper. From January 2024 to March 2025, Pinkas reportedly received hundreds of thousands of shekels via a businessman, who acted as an intermediary for Jay Footlik, a U.S. lobbyist representing Qatar.
During this period, Pinkas published several English-language columns portraying Qatar positively, particularly emphasizing its role in mediating hostage negotiations and supporting Gaza—positions that reportedly aligned with messaging drafted by Footlik. The case is part of a broader investigation.
This is the third such incident involving Haaretz journalists, following the dismissal of Chaim Levinson and the exposure of another pro-Qatar column linked to the same network.
