There is a lot of confusion about slavery in Islamic society. Since the Ottoman sultans functioned as divine monarchs in a sense all Ottoman subjects were their slaves. Moreover since in an Islamic state no Muslim may legally be enslaved the act of converting those taken in the devshirme acted as automatic legal manumission.
