Burger was named Chief Justice for the [[U. S. Supreme Court]] by President [[Richard Nixon]] in 1969. He sided with conservatives on most cases and helped to hold in check the liberal decisions of the Earl Warren, his predecessor. He also spoke for a unaminous Court supporting of a mandate for the Watergate tapes which brought about Nixon's resignation.
