According to FBI surveillance and background checks, Gertler was a contact of Philip Dunaway, [[Maurice Halperin]], David Wahl, Bowen Smith, and others of their circle. His academic connections included Robert Brady, [[Franz Neumann]], Robert Lynd, and [[Owen Lattimore]].
