Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff, known as Doris Day was born April 3, 1924, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Starting out as a dancer and songstress, her wholesome image contributed to her becoming one of the top stars of the 1950s and 1960s.
Doris Day starred in 39 motion pictures including Romance On The High Seas, By The Light of the Silvery Moon, Tea For Two, Love Me Or Leave Me, Teachers Pet, The Man Who Knew Too Much (where her “Que Sera, Sera” won an Oscar) and Calamity Jane, which won an Oscar for Best Song for “Secret Love”. In 1959, starring with Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk, Doris Day was nominated again for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Doris Day started her career as a featured vocalist with the big bands of Bob Crosby and Les Brown and became a regular on radio’s Your Hit Parade. Day topped the chart in 1948 with "Love Somebody" and "It's Magic". "My Darling, My Darling" was top ten that same year with "Again" peaking at #2 in 1949. "Bewitched" reached the top ten in 1950 and the following year "Shanghai" also did.
Another muti-million-selling single, "A Guy is A Guy", was #1 in 1952, and Day teamed up with Frankie Laine for a top ten hit, "Sugerbush", that same year. "Secret Love" topped the Hit Parade in 1954 and stayed on the bestseller chart for 22 weeks straight. It was followed with a top five hit, "If I Give My Heart To You".
Even with the birth of rock 'n' roll in 1955, Doris Day hit with the ballad, "I'll Never Stop Loving You", taken from her film Love Me Or Leave Me. Another film, The Man Who Knew Too Much, spawned Day's "Whatever Will Be Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)", which peaked at #2 in 1956. Her "Everybody Loves A Lover" was top ten in 1958.
In just 15 years Doris Day landed 55 times on the most popular singles chart and her Greatest Hits album and those featuring the songs of her many motion pictures were very successful.
Today Doris Day lives quietly near Carmel, California where she is an animal welfare advocate.
