The Bastille was a large fortress in Paris, France, famous for its extensive dungeons in which many French revolutionaries were imprisoned. One of its more well-known tenants was the Marquis de Sade.
Bastille Day (July 14) commemorates the liberation in 1789 of its inmates during the French Revolution.
The fortress was destroyed subsequent to the storming in 1789. Today, the site is occupied by the Place de la Bastille, site of the Opera Bastille.
