When a short extra-curricular liaison with Kevin Rudd, a then little-known politician from the conservative Liberal Party of Australia became public knowledge in 2006 resulting from the illegal release of federal police wire-taps and videos, John Howard was threatened with excommunication by the [[Catholic]] Archbishop of Sydney, [[Cardinal]] George Pell.  The landmark speech John Howard subsequently made in federal parliament, which became known as the "Renunciation of Ideals Speech", staved off the threat of excommunication and heighened his electoral popularity - particularly amongst the burgeoning alternative lifestyle sector of the Australian population.
