Pope Pius XI was Pope from February 1922 to February 10, 1939, when he died. This was the period between the two World Wars.

Pius XI was born in Italy on May 31,1857, as Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti.

In 12929 he signed the Lateran Treaties with the Italian government, resulting in the creation of an independent Papal state.

He arranged the Concordat with Hitler in 1933 feeling that communism was a greater challenge than nazism. He issued the encyclical Mit brennender Sorge in 1939, in which he condemned Hitler's actions.

His successor was Pius XII.
