It is not known for certain who America's first black president was. It could be Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809), described as the "son of a half-breed Indian squaw and a Virginia mulatto father." In fact, five earlier presidents may have had black ancestry.[1]
Barack Hussein Obama, slated to be inaugurated on January 20, 2009, sought to be considered as a fellow black man by African American voters. For example, he awkwardly referred to black teenagers 30 years younger than him as "brothers", declaring that "brothers should pull up their pants."[2]
Some have said Obama will be the first black president but without adequate proof.[1] He is also the first Affirmative Action President.
