The term is usually considered to be derived from the [[Arabic]] ''hashshashin'', a member of an extreme [[Islamic]] sect active in northern [[Iran]] in the [[medieval]] period, although various other interpretations have derived the word from practices believed to have been performed by the sect, as well as being adapted from the name of the sect's founder.
