Bavaria (German: Bayern) is a Land (State) of the Federal Republic of Germany, situated in the south-east of the country. Its capital is Munich. Until 1918 Bavaria was a kingdom within the German Empire; prior to the formation of the German Empire in 1871 it had been an independent kingdom.

Bavaria has the second-largest economy in Germany, after North Rhine-Westphalia. Its main resources are industry (motor vehicles, heavy electrical equipments, consumer electronics) and services (banks, ensurance, tourism, entertainment).
