The Piltdown Man was one of many frauds perpetrated by promoters of the theory of evolution.  This particular fraud was taught to an entire generation of students worldwide from 1912 to 1953, when it it was conclusively proven to be a hoax.  The Piltdown Man was featured in the textbook at issue in the [[Scopes trial]] in Tennessee.

Science is dedicated to rigorous testing and proving or disproving theories, but the scientific method was ignored with respect to the Piltdown Man and artifacts like "him".  The Piltdown Man consisted of a medieval skull combined with the lower jaw from an orangutan and teeth from a chimpanzee, which were then placed in  a gravel pit in the village of Piltdown, England.  The bones were stained with chromic acid and an iron solution, creating the crude appearance of age.  As is customary among evolution promoters, the date assigned to the bones was not from the bones at all, but rather were from older material found nearby.  Like similar artifacts today, there was no independent or public scrutiny of the actual materials.

Today defenders of the theory of evolution claim that scientists recognized that the Piltdown Man was a fraud sooner than 1953, but did not speak out about it.  If true, then such silence begs more questions than it answers.  How many scientists today recognize the theory of evolution to be fraudulent but do not speak out about it?
