Rally refers to a coming together of people for a common purpose as in a political rally, protest rally, pep rally, or to rally troops at a parade ground.
Rally can also mean to recover from a setback such as ill-health, a military rout or a drop in the stock market.
In motor-sport a rally is a type of racing that takes place on a public roads or cross-country; e.g. Monte Carlo Rally or the Paris-Dakar Rally. An interchange of shots in tennis or volleyball is also known as a rally.
