They sought the release of 50 Palestinian prisoners held in [[Israel]]. After being refused permission to dock in [[Syria]], the hijackers shot and killed a wheelchair-bound American citizen, [[Leon Klinghoffer]], and threw his body overboard solely because he was [[Jewish]].
