The Hijra was the migration of Mohammad and his followers to Medina in 622. They were driven out of Mecca because rich businessmen in Mecca who profited from pilgrims coming to the temple of Ka'aba feared they might lose customers because of Mohammad's teaching. Mohammad's flight from Mecca marks the first year of the Islamic calendar.
