The '''monomyth''' is a theoretical "first myth" common to all human beings throughout the world, perhaps stemming from [[Jung]]ian archetypical knowledge. The term was first coined and the theory made famous by American literary critic and author [[Joseph Campbell]] in his books ''The Hero with a Thousand Faces'' and ''The Masks of God'', wherein he mapped out the typical monomythic passage in several elaborate stages through which the prototypical ur-hero would pass. They include "The Call," the "Apotheosis," and the "Return." This approach to literary analysis is part of the overall theory known as [[neoconstruction]]ism, and has proven extremely attractive to a variety of people, including filmmaker [[George Lucas]], who was strongly influenced by the notion of the monomyth.
