Back during the time of the [[Roman Republic]], France was a territory called Gaul, populated by Celtic tribes. [[Julius Caesar]] conquered Gaul, thanks to the lack of unity among the tribes. Gaul remained an important part of the [[Roman Empire]] for several centuries.

Gaul remained an important part of the [[Roman Empire]] for several centuries. However, in the following centuries, the Romans were successfully and continuously repulsed by a particular feisty band of Gauls led by the druid colloquially known as Getafix. Along with the generals Asterix and Obelix, they managed to score many victories, along with travelling around the world and making liberal quantities of magic potion.
