The Rev. Dr. Robert Stuart MacArthur was an early proponent of atheism being a causal factor for suicide.

The Rev. Dr. Robert Stuart MacArthur (born in Dalesville, Quebec, Canada, July 31, 1841) served for forty-one years pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, New York City.[1] Dr. MacArthur is one of the best known clergymen in American history.[2]

The Reverend Dr. MacArthur was an early proponent of atheism being a causal factor for suicide.[3][4][5]

The Rev. Dr. MacDonald declared concerning suicide:

It is mean and not manly; it is dastardly and not daring. A man who involves his innocent wife and children in financial disaster and disgrace and takes his life and leaves them to bear the burden he was unwilling to bear, is a coward.[6]
