One World Trace Center or 1WTC, as it is commonly known, is the main building of a complex currently being constructed to replace the World Trade Center twin towers destroyed in the September 11th, 2001 attacks in Manhattan, New York City. Formerly known as Freedom Tower, the design for the complex was chosen from a number of designs submitted to a contest.
The complex consists of two towers, a 105-story skyscraper, occupying the former location of the former 6 World Trade Center, and a smaller tower next to it. 1WTC, when completed, will be 1776 feet tall, an homage to the United States' Independence Date[1], making it the tallest building in the United States and one of the tallest buildings in the world.[2]
At the base of 1WTC will be a memorial to the victims of the terrorist attacks which opened to the public on September 12th, 2011 and a museum which is scheduled to open on September 11th, 2012.
The building was originally slated to be completed in late 2010 to early 2011.[3] However, delays have twice pushed back the opening to the current scheduled completion in late 2013 with an official opening of 2014.[4]
