Sumer was the land of Sumerians in southern Mesopotamia, in present-day Iraq. Ur was the most important city. The Sumerians' greatest invention was cuneiform writing. They also invented the first codes of law, the first city-states, the seed plow, the sailboat, and the potter’s wheel.
