Essay:Criticism of Jimmy Carter
Although Jimmy Carter is now famous for his human rights crusade, he was not always a champion of them. During his reign, he supported the brutal regime in Indonesia which resulted in the massacre of 200,000 Timorese and a handful of Westerners. Carter is also criticized for funding Osama bin Laden (which was continued under the Reagan administration).
El Salvador
Although the Reagan administration supported the brutal military dictatorship in El Salvador throughout the 80s, it was actually Carter who began funding the anti-Communist military dictatorship. Liberals frequently criticize Reagan for this support (and rightly so) but often forget (or ignore) Carter's crucial role in that support. Carter was also tolerant of the corrupt and brutal Somoza dynasty in Nicaragua until the human rights violations became so severe. Reagan would later fund a group of anti-Communist guerillas made up of Somoza's old National Guard.
