Diversity refers to a blend of several unique items coexisting. For example, you could have a diverse collection, a diversified stock portfolio, or a diverse ecosystem.

However most commonly these days, the term has been redefined according to modern standards of political correctness to describe racial, religious, cultural, and other "diversity" being increasingly promoted within a single society. Racial Diversity is the blending of many ethnic backgrounds, and is used to justify the practice of affirmative action.
