Local government is government below the national level. In some countries, such as the United States, local government more specifically refers to government below the state level. Types of local government are varied and include counties, cities, townships, school districts, and special districts.
In the United States, the Tenth Amendment makes local government in the states a matter for state legislatures rather than for Congress. However, limitations on state power in the United States Constitution, such as the Equal Protection Clause, impose some limitations on states' powers to organize local governments.
