Irish (Gaeilge) is a Celtic language spoken in a number of areas of Ireland known as the Gaeltacht; it is the official language of the Republic of Ireland although the population is mostly English-speaking. It is also a recognized minority language in Northern Ireland. Irish is similar in form to Scottish Gaelic, spoken in parts of the Scottish Highlands. It is also related to Manx Gaelic, an extinct language once spoken in the Isle of Man.
