Pecos River

The Pecos River rises in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and runs for 900 miles across New Mexico and Texas, mostly paralleling the Rio Grande before finally joining it at the Amistad National Recreation Area. The river is an important source of irrigation for farmland in the state of New Mexico, where water conservation practices are overseen by the United States Bureau of Reclamation.
In the mid-19th century, rancher and land baron Milton Faver became the "first cattle king west of the Pecos."
